Stüssy Livin’ General Store

The Stüssy Livin’ General Store project (2011–2014) quietly reshaped how a streetwear brand could approach lifestyle. Launched by Stüssy Japan under Shin Okishima, it wasn’t a clothing line or a concept store, but a curated platform for domestic tools and daily-use objects. Drawing from West Coast ease and Japanese utility, it offered folding chairs, diner mugs, rain boots, and enamel cookware—products sold through pop-ups and shop-in-shops with muted branding and a restrained palette. Inspired by general stores, suburban kitchens, and camp gear, Livin’ sidestepped seasonal hype to focus on use and feel. It never shouted. It suggested. These items distill its philosophy: modest utility, durable charm, and domestic ease.

1. Coffee Tools

The Stüssy Livin’ collection included a comprehensive set of tools for daily coffee preparation. Core items ranged from manual grinders and enamel mugs to drip stands, and coffee spoons, often produced in seasonal finishes. Some were developed in collaboration with coffee roasters such as Mellow Coffee. These objects emphasized physical engagement and material clarity, forming a system that supported habit and ritual through consistent use.

2. Clocks and Home Goods

Livin’ approached timekeeping and household items with a consistent design language. The GS Flip Clock by TWEMCO and the Time Is Money wall clock featured minimal branding and clear visual structure. Additional domestic objects included the GS Enamel Tray, GS Incense Burner, wood-handled kitchen utensils, aluminum pen trays, Scoutbooks notebooks, and entryway accessories such as co-branded doormats. Each item reflected an emphasis on modest form and long-term use.

3. Furniture and Seating

The furniture offering focused on mobility and adaptability. Products included the GS Kermit Chair, a folding chair constructed from canvas and wood, and the GS Fiberglass Rocker by Modernica, which combined a molded shell with wood runners. Other items in the category included stools, collapsible benches, and compact side tables, all designed for flexible placement across indoor and outdoor environments.

4. Carry Goods

Stüssy Livin’ developed a series of carrying tools oriented toward utility and durability. Notable examples include the GS Tembea Skate Duffle with a reinforced base and the GS BLK PINE Tote made of ballistic nylon. Additional items such as the GS Brown Bag, GS Utility Pouch, and GS Tool Roll prioritized structural reinforcement, weather resistance, and simple closure systems, all with minimal branding.

5. Everyday Wearables

Garments and footwear within the project were constructed for domestic and routine use. Key releases included the GS Pocket Tee produced with Velva Sheen, GS Rayon Boxer Shorts, aprons, lightweight jackets, and quilted GS Room Shoes. In collaboration with MoonStar, the GS Rain Shoes featured fatigue-green rubber lowers and canvas uppers. These pieces were consistent in their material choice and color palette, positioned to integrate into practical, repetitive use rather than seasonal presentation.
